Presenter: Dr Eileen Britt

Learning Motivational Interviewing (MI) involves more than just a one or two day training. This workshop is suited to individuals who have attended foundational MI training equivalent to a 2-day workshop and have had the opportunity to utilise MI in their work*. This workshop is designed to support individuals on this journey by providing multiple opportunities to learn. In this intensive one-day skill-building workshop participants will be provided with an interactive, experiential learning approach to advance their MI skills. The workshop will involve intensive practice, observation and coaching tailored to the group’s MI skills needs in order to deepen participants’ ability to practice MI effectively. A specific focus will include reflective listening (particularly complex reflections), cultivating change talk, and softening sustain talk. The workshop will include live demonstration, video demonstration, “real plays” and practice in small group exercises with coaching and feedback (during and after exercises). Participants will be asked to engage in an online (40-60mins) re-fresher training and pre-reading in preparation for the workshop.

Workshop Facilitator: Dr Eileen Britt is a Fellow of the NZ College of Clinical Psychologist, and is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, an international collective of MI trainers and researchers who promote excellence in the practice and training of MI. She has a long-standing interest in MI research, implementation, training and practice. Eileen teaches MI at the University of Canterbury on the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology programme, as well two postgraduate papers on MI within the School of Health Sciences, and has experience in providing MI training to a range of different professional groups such as, physiotherapists, dietitians, nurses, social workers, probation workers and psychologists.

There will be a 2-day foundational MI workshop in Christchurch on Mar 27-28 facilitated by Eileen Britt which is being organised by the Canterbury Branch of the NZ Psychological Society.
