Psychologist - Youth/Young Mums

  • Youth (16-25) and their babies/children
  • Delivering psychological interventions within a whānau context
  • Part-time or full-time permanent position

The opportunity:

Are you passionate about making fundamental changes in the trajectory of young women, their pēpi/tamariki, and whānau?  An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced, registered psychologist experienced in working with children, youth, and/or maternal/infant mental health to join our dynamic Fresh Minds team, and work as part of the Start Well team.

Start Well is an intensive wrap around service that has been set up in South Auckland as an initiative of the South Auckland Social Wellness Board. Start Well's focus is on supporting young mothers in Mangere from pregnancy through to when their children are aged 5; recognising the importance of children's early years in supporting a 'best start' in life and the lasting impact that early life experiences have on a child's future. The aim of Start Well is to support mothers and pēpi/tamariki health and social needs through a strengths-based approach that focuses on relationships and whānau partnership.

Fresh Minds provides some FTE to Start Well, and works with the team and young women and their whānau to look at whānau -based approaches to improving overall wellbeing and resiliency, reduce psychological distress, and to enhance parenting skills and capacity.  There are many opportunities for innovation, and to look at creative ways to deliver meaningful interventions at an individual whānau, and wider community level.  The FTE available within Start Well is 0.3, however, this can be supplemented with other youth and adult opportunities within Fresh Minds up to 1.0 if required.
