About
I trained as a clinical psychologist at the University of Canterbury in the 1990s and have been a registered clinical psychologist since 1999. I completed a PhD in Psychological Medicine at the Christchurch School of Medicine, University of Otago, in 2001.
I have worked in community mental health system in the child and family area; I worked for the Department of Corrections for six years; I taught Child and Adolescent Development and Couple and Family Therapy at the University of Canterbury for five years, and I have taught Case Formulation at the clinical psychology training programmes in New Zealand. The model of case formulation and clinical reasoning was developed with Prof Tony Ward and Prof Brian Haig in the 1990s and 2000s. I have co-authored a number of publications on this topic.
I developed a methodology for preparing Child Custody Evaluations for the Family Court. I published this work and presented it at conferences in New Zealand, Australia and the USA. I published this work, and have presented a training workshop a number of times over the years for psychologists wanting to work in a methodologically robust way. I continue to train, mentor and supervise psychologists wanting to enter this line of work.
I have a particular interest in clinical (or professional) supervision, and provide supervision for those in a number of different professions, including psychologists, lawyers, the judiciary, doctors, managers and team leaders, probation officers, policy makers, counsellors, and social workers. I have developed and delivered an advanced clinical supervision workshop around New Zealand for the past five years.
I prepare risk assessments for the Department of Corrections for people being considered for Extended Supervision Orders; I prepare child custody evaluations for the Family Court and I have a large supervision practice. I also provide therapy for adults, particularly in the areas of Couples Therapy and Family Therapy, and trauma-related adjustment.
