About
Dr. Helen Rowse
Clinical Psychologist
Ph.D., PGDipClinPsyc (Victoria University of Wellington)
I grew up in the Wellington area and completed my clinical psychology training and Ph.D. at Victoria University. I have practiced as a Clinical Psychologist for the last 20 years, working with children, adolescents, adults and families across a range of services, both in New Zealand and overseas.
In my clinical practice, I work with a wide range of client concerns, including mood regulation, anxiety, pain management, adjustment difficulties, developmental concerns and behaviour management strategies. I work primarily from a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) approach, incorporating techniques from other approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness and Narrative Therapy. I also offer Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
I have experience working in a Forensic setting, and have been based in Dublin, Ireland, where I worked in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). After a few years there, my husband and I had our first child and moved back to New Zealand to be closer to whānau. We've had another two children since then and, alongside my private practice, I worked as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Hutt Valley DHB CAMHS for over 10 years. I then began my private practice, alongside working part-time at Victoria University, teaching in the Clinical Psychology training programme for 5 years. I currently work part-time in my private practice and part-time at an NGO in Wellington, focused on working with young people who have experienced trauma.
